About Rohan Joseph

Dr. Joseph is a board certified general surgeon with expertise in endocrine, breast, oncologic and minimally invasive gastrointestinal, hernia and weight loss surgery. He is presently the only fellowship trained metabolic surgeon (endocrine + weight loss surgery) in the North Florida region.

Dr. Joseph graduated medical school with honors at the University of Mumbai in Mumbai, India and then completed a research fellowship at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC where he studied the molecular mechanism of alcoholic liver disease. He then completed a seven year general surgery residency at the Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. During his residency he completed a two year research fellowship at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (MITIE) where he focused on developing curricula in surgical education, training and simulation. During his research sabbatical, he spent time in Strasburg, France at IRCAD, a world renowned institution in minimally invasive surgery. He worked with the University of Houston’s computer science department in the novel field of computational surgery and partnered with industry to test novel surgical instrumentation for minimally invasive surgery.

During his training, Dr. Joseph received awards for excellence in research from the Houston Surgical Society, Texas Association for Surgical Skills Laboratories and from the Houston Methodist Hospital. He represented his residency program on two occasions at the American College of Surgeons Surgical Jeopardy (South Texas chapter) competition and secured first place on both occasions. He also travelled to Toronto, Canada to represent his Program at the American Association for Surgical Education. After his residency, Dr. Joseph completed an endocrine and metabolic/ weight loss surgery fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY..

Dr. Joseph has presented his work at several local and national meetings such as the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Houston Surgical Society and the Texas Association for Surgical Skills Laboratories. He has also published his research in prestigious peer reviewed journals such as Hepatology, Surgical Endoscopy and Nature and written text book chapters in the field of gastrointestinal and endocrine surgery.

He serves on the Board of Governors of Capital Medical Society in Tallahassee and as an Alternate Delegate to the Florida Medical Association, house of representatives. He was selected to the University of Florida’s Karl M. Altenburger Leadership Academy and was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in October 2016 at Washington DC. He also serves on the Humanitarian and SMART task forces at SAGES.

Dr. Joseph has participated in medical mission trips in India, Kenya and Bolivia.

He is married to Elizabeth Medley, JD and has 2 children, Zachary and Zoe. Together they enjoy horseback riding, wildlife photography and travelling.
